stop-motion

Stop motion animation is a technique in which objects are moved in small increments and photographed frame by frame so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion when they are played back. Any kind of object can thus be animated.

Have a walk in my animated universe. If you want to understand what drives me to create these elaborate films, watch the short documentary about my work, made by Ulrike Peichert some years ago.

Technique: stop motion animation with green-key and drawn animation, edited in After Effects

This video was made after one of the musicians of the band who made the music, my dear friend Andrew suddenly passed away. It’s been a low-budget production, but it was great to create a video to honor my friend. Technically I would solve some things differently now, but it was fun to try to find solutions to represent the universe and black holes using plasticine and tiny objects and play around with green-screen technique to make the astronauts fly, who were hanging on aluminum wires in front of a green background. The wires needed to be erased in each frame, and the stars were created on various layers in After Effects. They still look a bit too stiff to me, but learning forever. I think now when using AI there are interesting options to add more dynamics…

Animating people is a special challenge, but it is so much fun. I have created a lot of short animations with people at gallery openings and special events. It takes patience from both the filmmaker and the model. It will always be a tiny film. But a unique one!
